QUESTION OF THE DAY: Is there a film that you think is perfect in its original form and should never be remade?
Well, on the one hand, I do appreciate the notion that any film can be expanded upon if given to the right crew and cast. If you don't get some idiot who just reshoots the original frames from the same angles, you can be shown something inspired and view your favorite films from totally new perspectives.
For instance, I much prefer the American remakes of both The Ring and The Grudge; John Carpenter's The Thing is a remake, as well as The Fly with Jeff Goldblum.
ON THE OTHER HAND: I have a list as long as my leg of films I dont want anyone to touch because I nostalgia for them way too hard. The Thing is certainly one of them. Jaws, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, Alien, The Terminator-- I could go on and on.
It's really simple nostalgia, tho. I don't believe there is a perfect film whose Awesome cannot ever be duplicated. I may fight and piss and moan but ultimately I think anyone can do even my most beloved films justice. You simply have to find the right people.
And in the case of films like True Grit or To Kill a Mockingbird, in which the film icon who starred in it has passed, that Right Person may have shoes the size of flippin battleships to fill. (No one can take the Duke's place.)
So I concede that point. There's another thing tho that really winds me up and that's the CG issue. I had a cousin, same age as myself, who loathed Jaws because "the shark looked fake."That's a lame reason, imho. But to each their own.
I know there's a lot of demand these days, especially from the younger generation, to have things look Real. But in my opinion most CG is only there to cover up fail!acting and story that barely passes for drivel. (Not a remake but a point all the same: STAR. WARS. EPISODE. THREE. FFS there was no bloody set. And I actually LIKE Hayden Christensen. I blame Lucas for the faily acting.)
You cannot CG in brilliant writing and honest talent. That has to be filmed first.
